Evidence 9: EDT 672 Journal 5 – “RAP Session”

Rationale 9:This journal was created as part of Module five for EDT 672 and was designed to have us reflect on useful resources for the online course we were developing, how the online course allowed us to expand student experiences, and discuss insights we had gained throughout the process.
This reflection allowed me to share the evolution of my thought process throughout the development of my Moodle course. I learned a lot about the importance of asynchronous student communication as a means of self-reflection and evaluating growth. My students will definitely benefit from this because I had previously not included very much student discussion in the form of forums and reflection questions. I also gained an appreciation for alternative assessment. Previously, I would determine whether or not a student had completed an IEP objective, but not really included the student in that discussion. Now, I plan to utilize more rubrics, even though I do not provide letter grades to students, so that the students are able to understand the goals and purpose of the lesson beforehand and then are able to reflect upon the knowledge they gained afterward.

Knowledge:
9.K.1 The teacher understands methods of inquiry that provide him/her with a variety of self-assessment and problem-solving strategies for reflecting on his/her practice, its influences on students’ growth and learning, and the complex interactions between them.
This journal entry shows that I am able to use resources, such as textbooks, online course materials, and web resources to help evaluate my methods of teaching and improve upon them. I am able to recognize areas in which updating my knowledge and teaching methods will further my students’ learning and expand their learning opportunities.

Skills or Performance:
9.S.3 The teacher seeks out professional literature, and other resources to support his/her own development as a learner and a teacher.
I chose the Marian Educational Technology Master’s program to help me increase my knowledge and awareness of web resources, technology, 21st century skills, and to gain a better understanding of all of these areas so that I can better provide meaningful learning opportunities and relevant accommodations for my students with visual impairments. This journal entry proves that I have actively sought additional professional development through this program, through this course, and through the materials and texts provided through this course.

Dispositions:
9.D.4 The teacher is committed to seeking out, developing, and continually refining practices that address the individual needs of students.
This journal entry shows that I am open to the evolution of my instructional practices and committed to providing individualized instruction to support my students in their learning. I have discovered several helpful resources and found a new way to utilize them through the creation of my Moodle course and gained several new insights as a result of this process.
